【The Geometry of GOLF】 3. Face angle and Loft
When you hit a draw or fade ball, you close or open the face, which causes to changes the loft. So how much will it change? ⊿Loft=⊿Face Angle / tan(Lie Angle) It will be as formula above. In other words, if the lie angle from the driver to the pitching wedge is changed from 54 degrees to 65 degrees, the change in loft is the change in the face angle multiplied by the % in the table. For example, a 54-degree driver with a 3-degree face closure reduces loft by 2.2 degrees. A driver with a loft of 10 degrees will have a loft of 7.8 degrees. Also, if you close the face 3 degrees with a 5-iron with a 60-degree lie angle, the loft will decrease by 1.7 degrees. If the loft is reduced by 1.7 degrees, the loft difference between the iron numbers is about 4 degrees, so if there is a difference of 10 yards between iron numbers, 1 degree of loft equals a difference of 2.5 yards. Therefore, closing the face 3 degrees reduces loft by 1.7 degrees, resulting in an extra 4.3 yards of carry. Conversely, if you open the face 3 degrees, the loft increases by 1 degree, and you lose 4.3 yards. If the lie angle changes, the change in loft will change even if the change in face angle is the same. For example, if the lie angle is 54 degrees, the loft will change by about 70% of the face angle change. For example, if you close the face 3 degrees, the loft will decrease by about 2 degrees. A driver’s loft is originally small at around 10 degrees, so if it changes by 2 degrees, the effect will be large. A low hook ball, so-called duck hook, occurs when the face is closed and the loft is reduced. A sand wedge with a loft of 56 degrees will lose about 1.4 degrees if it is closed 3 degrees, but this loft change does not have a big impact. The sand wedge has a short shaft, so the lie angle is large, and the loft change due to the face angle change is not as large as the driver. On the other hand, a driver with a long shaft, low lie angle, and low loft will have a greater impact on the change in loft at impact than the change in face angle.
