【The Geometry of GOLF】 2. How to aim at the target by fade or draw ball (cont.2)
When you hit with a non-zero face to path, you will hit with the face closed or open, which will change the impact loft. Then the flight distance will change. The change in face angle required for the calculation is given by the formula above. If the distance to the pin is 100, 150, or 200 yards and the ball launch direction is 5 yards to the right of the pin, the changes in the face angle will be about 8.5 degrees, about 2.9 degrees, and about 1.1 degrees, respectively. If the lie angle is 65 degrees, a change in face angle of 8.5 degrees will change the loft by about 4 degrees. The loft difference between the 9 iron and the pitching wedge is about 5 degrees, so 4 degree changes by about half the number. In the case of a draw ball, you have to think that carry will be longer by the half the number of club. At 150 yards, the loft changes about 1.5 degree. The loft difference between counts is about 4 degrees, so in this case as well, it will change by a quarter number of club. In the case of 200 yards, the change in loft is about 0.7 degrees, but the loft difference between club counts that hit 200 yards is about 2 degrees, so the flight distance will change by about 1/3 of club. You have to think these deviations when you hit.
