【The Geometry of GOLF】 2. How to aim at the target by fade or draw ball (cont.)
The relationship between the launch direction and the club path cannot be expressed by a simple formula, as shown in the figure above. Assuming that the ball launch direction (horizontal distance from the target) is X and the ball launch direction and the club path direction(horizontal distance from the launch direction) is Y, the ratio Y/X is as above figure graph when the driver’s head speed is 45 m / s. It will be a curve like this. For draws and fades, the draw closes the face, the fade opens the face, and hitting the draw results in a smaller loft and therefore a smaller face to path. Also, players with faster head speeds will hit the same distance with a club with a larger loft, resulting in a larger face to path overall. For example, if the distance to the pin is 100 yards and the launch direction is 5 yards to the right of the pin, the Y/X is about 3 from the graph. The ball will go to the pin direction. If the distance to the pin is 150 yards and the launch direction is also 5 yards to the right, the Y/X is about 1.5, so the club path is about 7.5 yards to the right to the launch direction. If the distance to the pin is 200 yards and the conditions are the same, the Y/X is about 0.8 and the club path is about 4 yards to the right to the launch direction. When aiming at the target with a fade ball, if the distance is 150 yards and the launch direction is 5 yards to the left, the Y / X is about 1.6, so the club path is about 8 yards to the left of the launch direction. If the launch direction is 10 yards to the left, the club path will be 16 yards to the left of the launch direction. In this case, the club face will be open about 6 degrees. Then the loft will increase about 3 degrees. Then, the ball carry will decrease by more than half the number of club, so if you raise the one club number, the loft will decrease by that amount, the Y/X will be about 1.5, and the club path will be 15 yards to the left of the launch direction.
